What’s Happening: Today in Jersey City, a shooting unfolded in several locations over the course of multiple hours. Six people were killed, including a veteran Jersey City Police detective, Joseph Seals. Seals leaves behind a wife and five children Chief Mike Kelly said at a press conference.
The Response: Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement “Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown. I have every confidence in our law enforcement professionals to ensure the safety of the community and resolve this situation.”
Flag This: A total of 106 police officers lost their lives on duty in 2018, a 13% increase on 2017. According to Statista, which provided the map below, “their average age was 37, with an average tenure of 10 years in law enforcement. 52 of the officers killed by felons were men while three were women.”
